ENGLISH VERSION BELOW Sonic Addictive es una banda francesa que recientemente han presentado su EP debut “Welcome to Neon City” en la que nos presentan un viaje musical cuya propuesta se centra en el hybrid cinematic rock/metal. A través de un mapa retro futurista, Sonic Addictive viaja de universo en universo y cambia su estilo musical y visual con cada EP. Aquí te presentamos nuestra reseña: Intro - Neon City es una canción instrumental en la que los sintetizadores son el elemento principal al que se añaden algunos elementos ambientales que parecieran introducirnos a la ciudad. Mirror of the Unreal combina el uso de los sintetizadores y la guitarra eléctrica creando un sonido hasta cierto punto futurista. La voz de Julie Matheiu-Miniconi es un elemento que se agradece al oído en el que podemos percibir cierta influencia del metal sinfónico. A medida que avanza la canción se torna más rítmica y quizás bailable. My Winter Storm tiene está influencia pop en la ejecución de los teclados por parte de Sylvain Muscarnera. Un aspecto que llama mi atención es la interpretación vocal en la que podemos apreciar como su cantante juega con diferentes tonalidades llegando a su punto más álgido en el coro. Esta canción cuenta con una versión instrumental en 16-Bits, un poco extraña a mi parecer, pero que aporta este elemento divertido al álbum. </5Hine 0n> tiene este elemento futurista/progresivo en el empleo del teclado y los sintetizadores siendo los indiscutibles protagonistas de la canción. Julie Matheiu-Miniconi realiza esta fusión con el metal sinfónico empleando una voz lírica que contrasta bastante bien. Interesante el empleo de voces masculinas y el acompañamiento coral al término de la canción. Goodbye City es mi canción favorita de este álbum de corta duración. Decisión inteligente por parte de la banda francesa el de utilizar los elementos ambientales para jugar con la imaginación del oyente haciéndonos sentir parte de este viaje a través de la ciudad. Una balada que permite que la voz de Julie Matheiu-Miniconi y Clara Beack (Embersland) sean el elemento principal más allá de la parte instrumental. Florian Moll y Fabien Ruiz realizan un gran trabajo en las guitarras al aporta esta parte melódica a la canción. Welcome to Neon City es un álbum en el que Sonic Addictive explora sus posibilidades creativas en la definición de un estilo musical propio. Me parece interesante como a medida que escuchamos el álbum vamos descubriendo las distintas capas musicales que lo integran. Me gustaría saber cómo será la evolución musical de la banda en un futuro al integrar diferentes géneros musicales en una sola propuesta. Calificación: 8/10. Through a futuristic retro map, Sonic Addictive travels from universe to universe and changes their musical and visual style with each EP. Here is our review: Intro - Neon City is an instrumental song in which synthesizers are the main element to which are added some ambient elements that seem to introduce us to the city. Mirror of the Unreal combines the use of synthesizers and electric guitar creating a futuristic sound. Julie Matheiu-Miniconi's voice is an element that is pleasing to the ear in which we can perceive a certain influence of symphonic metal. As the song progresses it becomes more rhythmic and perhaps danceable. My Winter Storm has this pop influence in the execution of the keyboards by Sylvain Muscarnera. One aspect that catches my attention is the vocal performance in which we can appreciate how the singer plays with different tonalities reaching its peak in the chorus. This song has an instrumental version in 16-Bits, a bit strange in my opinion, but that brings this fun element to the album. </5Hine 0n> has this futuristic/progressive element in the use of the keyboard and synthesizers being the undisputed protagonists of the song. Julie Matheiu-Miniconi performs this fusion with symphonic metal employing a lyrical voice that contrasts quite well. Interesting the use of male voices and the choral accompaniment at the end of the song. Goodbye City is my favorite song on this short-lived album. Smart decision by the French band to use the ambient elements to play with the listener's imagination making us feel part of this journey through the city. A ballad that allows the voice of Julie Matheiu-Miniconi and Clara Beack (Embersland) to be the main element beyond the instrumental part. Florian Moll and Fabien Ruiz do a great job on guitars bringing this melodic part to the song. Welcome to Neon City is an album in which Sonic Addictive explores their creative possibilities in defining their own musical style. I find it interesting how as we listen to the album we discover the different musical layers that integrate it. I would like to know how the band will evolve musically in the future by integrating different musical genres in a single proposal. Rating: 8/10. Integrada por Vasilis en las voces, Aggelos en la guitarra y Alexander en la batería, este trío recién presentó al mundo su álbum debut “Gates of War”. La Magia Absalón tuvo la oportunidad de platicar con Alexander acerca de sus orígenes como banda, la definición de su propuesta musical y sobre el futuro. LMA: Muchas gracias por aceptar esta entrevista para La Magia Absalón, Hellpass es una banda de reciente creación y que apenas está abriéndose camino en la escena, ¿cómo surgió la idea de formar la banda? Alexander: ¡Hola! En primer lugar, permítanme presentarme a mí y a la banda. Somos Hellpass, una banda de Heavy/Thrash Metal de Thessaloniki Grecia. Mi nombre es Alexander, soy el baterista de Hellpass y represento a HellPass como su portavoz. Después de nuestro primer jam yo era el baterista oficial de esa banda. Cuando este proyecto se disolvió, los dos comenzamos Hellpass. Poco después, Vasilis se unió a la banda. LMA: Un aspecto que me pareció interesante de su álbum debut y que puede apreciarse dentro de las canciones es la presencia de elementos folclóricos propios de la cultura nórdica, en específico, de los vikingos, ¿de dónde surgió ese interés por fusionar el folk con su propuesta basada en el heavy metal? Alexander: Este interés proviene de Manowar, Bathory, Amon Amarth y todas las bandas épicas/paganas que existieron y continúan existiendo hasta el día de hoy en la música metal. Nosotros también somos fans de este tipo de metal. Por el tema de la letra nórdica de nuestra canción “Oath to the Metal Gods” (que es la canción a la que entiendo te refieres) debemos agradecer, especialmente, a Vasilis, nuestro frontman ya que escribió todas las letras y trajo el concepto vikingo en la canción. LMA: Su álbum debut se titula “Gates of War” en alusión a los acontecimientos mundiales de los últimos años. ¿Podemos encontrar algunas canciones que aborden situaciones sociales/políticas dentro del álbum? Alexander: Correcto. En febrero de 2023 salió nuestro hijo del metal, por así decirlo, nuestro primogénito, “Gates of War”. LMA: Thank you very much for accepting this interview for La Magia Absalón, Hellpass is a recently created band that is just making its way into the scene, how did the idea of forming the band come about? Alexander: Hello there! First of all let me introduce myself and the band. We are Hellpass, a Heavy/Thrash Metal band from Thessaloniki Greece. My name is Alexander, I am the drummer of Hellpass and I represent HellPass as their spokesman. We are honored to be hosted in an interview by you and we would like to thank you for this opportunity you have given us, thus letting a broader audience to get to know us better! Music was always a love of mine, so I began playing and composing from an early age and got involved with many musicians and bands not only in the metal scene but in a broader sense. But the aggressiveness of the heavy sound and the energy that flows from it appealed to me from an early age. I was bitten by the heavy metal bug! The element that brought Angelos and me together is our love for heavy music and the burning desire to get involved with it professionally. We first met through an online ad. Angelos was playing in a heavy metal band at the time and they needed a drummer, so I called and booked an audition. After our first jam I was the official drummer of that band. When this project disbanded the two of us started Hellpass. Shortly after, Vasilis joined the band. We started out as a three piece and within a couple of months we had composed our debut album, “Gates of War”, in its entirety and in the late summer of ‘22 we entered the recording studio. Meantime, we were searching for a bassist so Vasilis could focus more on vocals. In the early fall of 2022 Nick entered the band and started learning songs and rehearsing immediately. Our love for heavy music and the need to perform live all around the globe is what keeps Hellpass together to this day. From that love “Gates of War”, our debut album, sprung forth. LMA: The members of the band (Vasilis on vocals, Aggelos on guitar and Alexander on drums) have previous experience in other bands, how did the musical career of its members contribute to the composition of "Gates of War" as well as in define the musical proposal of the band? Alexander: In “Gates of War” Aggelos, our guitarist, is the main composer. So, basically Aggelos came up with all the parts of the stringed instruments, brought them in the rehearsal room and then we jammed endlessly all together until we were satisfied with the end product. Once the musical part had reached its’ final form, Vasilis, our singer wrote all the lyrics and came up with the vocal parts. We are an ever-growing band; every member carries his own influences, and the final product is a blend of all the personalities that are involved in the composition process. LMA: “Gates of War” is the name of their debut album that recovers the essence of heavy metal fused with other genres such as melodic, doom and even thrash. What are the musical influences that were an important part in defining the musical style of the band? Alexander: Hellpass is a heavy metal band with thrash and doom influences. Since the list of our influences is too long, I’ll give you just three names: Candlemass, Megadeth and Mötley Crüe. LMA: One aspect of your debut album that I found interesting and that can be seen in the songs is the presence of folk elements typical of Nordic culture, specifically, of the Vikings. Where did this interest in fusing folk withheavy metal come from? Alexander: This interest comes from Manowar, Bathory, Amon Amarth and all the epic/pagan bands that existed and continue to exist to this day in the metal music. We are fans of this type of metal, also. For the Nordic lyrical theme of our song “Oath to the Metal Gods” (which is the song that I understand you are referring to) we must thank, especially, Vasilis, our front man since he wrote all the lyrics and brought the Viking concept into the song. LMA: Their debut album is titled “Gates of War” in reference to the world events of recent years. Can we find some songs that address social/political situations within the album? Alexander: Correct. On February of 2023 our metal child, so to speak, our first born, “Gates of War” got out. Songs that address social/political situations within the album are the self titled “Gates of War”, “Futura” a song about the social decomposition of modern society and “Burning Flags” the closing song of our album “Gates of War”, which is also released as a Music Video which was shot in ImageNation studios and is available on our YouTube channel. “Burning Flags” is a flaming metal song that burns out all the boundaries and unites the people of the world together, so Burn,Burn,Burn the flags!!! LMA: A few months have passed since your debut album was released, how has the album been received by the press and fans? Alexander: We got positive feedback from fans, webzines, radio shows, record labels and friends from around the world. Zines are interested in us and interview us constantly. Fans buy our merch, listen to our music on spotify, YouTube and other sites (all they need is the Hellink https://linktr.ee/hellpass) and support our live shows. Radio Shows host our music and interview us, too. It seems that “Gates of War” is well received, and our music accomplishes the goal of inspiring the listener. We are more than thankful and satisfied! LMA: Have you had the opportunity to perform live to show the world your musical proposal? How has your experience been? Alexander: Since February Hellpass has started performing live. We have already played on well known stages of the biggest cities in Greece. We were offered a slot in Over the Wall festival that we have accepted with honour. The event that we are mostly excited about is our European tour with the black metal berserkers Arallu, with our death metal brothers from Athens Among Ruins and our death metal neighbours Gravestone from 11 until 19 of November of 2023. ENGLISH VERSION BELOW Publicado a finales del año pasado, Pyramid publicó “Rage”, un álbum que fusiona el metal progresivo con elementos sinfónicos. Lance Sawyer es la mente detrás del proyecto en la que involucra a músicos de amplia trayectoria dentro de la escena como Tim Ripper Owens (ex-Judas Priest, ex-Iced Earth, entre otros), Andry Lagiou (The Harps), Harry Conklin "The Tyrant" (Jag Panzer) en las voces, Mike Abdow (Fates Warning) en la guitarra y Chris Quirarte (Redemption) en la batería, además de Adam Bentley (Arch Echo) en la guitarra y en la mezcla de sonido, así como Joey Izzo (Arch Echo) en los teclados y Perrine Missemer en el violín. Aquí te presentamos nuestra reseña. Greed es la primera canción de este álbum y la impresión que me generó es que cuenta con algunos riffs que nos remontan a la época en la que “Ripper” Owens estuvo en Judas Priest. Con elementos melódicos y progresivos fácilmente identificables, es una canción cargada de energía y que marca la pauta en términos de sonido de lo que podemos escuchar posteriormente. Empty Roads cuenta con la participación de Andry Lagiou en las voces, las cuales se distinguen por su fuerza y profundidad. Al tratarse de una canción de casi 9 minutos de duración, considero que es un acierto por parte de la banda americana jugar con diferentes elementos musicales como el empleo de los instrumentos acústicos, el uso de los sintetizadores para generar este aporte progresivo además de incluir algunas partes sinfónicas que recrean este vaivén de emociones a través de la música y que complementan a la parte vocal. Rage es la canción homónima de este álbum y en la que se crea una fusión interesante entre el progresivo y el metal sinfónico. Me agradan las transiciones vocales jugando con tonos graves y agudos para recrear este cúmulo de emociones que buscan transmitirse en el oyente explotando las cualidades vocales de “Ripper” Owens. La canción llega a su punto más álgido cercano a los 5 minutos con un solo de guitarra espectacular. Beast muestra un sonido más rítmico que se desarrolla a lo largo de los 11 minutos de duración en la que se puede apreciar una fusión entre el metal sinfónico y progresivo, éste último guiado por la guitarra eléctrica y los teclados. La interpretación vocal de Harry Conklin es maravillosa pues agrega mayor emotividad a la canción, especialmente en las partes donde alcanza su punto más crítico. Se agradece la toma de decisiones por parte de la banda al crear canciones de larga duración bien estructuradas que no se sienten pesadas o aburridas al escucharlas. Control es una canción cargada de crítica social en la que “Ripper” Owens realiza una interpretación vocal que denota esta sensación de enojo ante esta restricción de libertad en lo que decimos y hacemos. A nivel instrumental, me agrada como la banda transita del metal sinfónico al progresivo de forma natural lo que añade mayor dinamismo y en la que no se siente el transcurrir del tiempo. Magic plantea una luz de esperanza en la que el mensaje principal es ser persistente con lo que queremos para hacerlo realidad. Una canción que desborda energía desde el primer acorde. Cargada de elementos progresivos a través de los teclados y la guitarra hacen que esta canción se disfrute de principio a fin. Tyranny aborda la crítica al gobierno como tema principal en la que se básicamente se menciona que ellos te harán escuchar sus reglas, pero ellos no escucharán lo que se les diga. La instrumentación cuenta con una alta dosis de elementos progresivos, así como transiciones sonoras interesantes que le añaden este toque dramático a la canción en concordancia con lo que se expresa en la parte lírica. Las notas de la guitarra nos introducen a Slayer, una canción que se destaca por su agresividad tanto en la interpretación musical como en la parte instrumental, esta última con el instrumento de siete cuerdas como elemento principal. En alguna parte de la canción puede apreciarse la presencia de los teclados aportándole esta nota progresiva que se agradece y que, de cierta forma, nos prepara para la última canción de este álbum. Dungeons and Dragons comienza con las delicadas notas del piano al que se agrega la presencia de orquesta sinfónica creando una atmósfera musical completamente distinta a lo que hemos escuchado en canciones anteriores. Una de las canciones más largas del álbum y quizás de las más complejas en términos creativos. Es de admirarse la capacidad vocal de “Ripper” Owens para llevar al límite sus cualidades interpretativas coqueteando un poco con las voces guturales. Esta canción en particular es un laberinto de sorpresas por las transiciones sonoras que presenta algunas de ellas las podemos predecir por cómo se va desarrollando la canción y otras que me causaron sorpresa pues rompe por completo con el estilo musical. Intencional o no, considero que es un gran cierre del álbum. Rage es un álbum que ha llamado mi atención por lo bien estructurado que está en términos musicales, quizás se tenga la impresión de que por tratarse de canciones de larga duración pudieran parecer aburridas, pero una vez que lo escuchas te atrapa y te envuelve en la atmósfera recreada por Lance Sawyer y en la que saca mayor provecho de las cualidades vocales e instrumentales de sus invitados. En definitiva, un álbum que vale la pena escuchar y disfrutar. Lance Sawyer is the mind behind the project, which involves musicians with extensive experience within the scene such as Tim Ripper Owens (ex-Judas Priest, ex-Iced Earth, among others), Andry Lagiou (The Harps), Harry Conklin " The Tyrant" (Jag Panzer) on vocals, Mike Abdow (Fates Warning) on guitar and Chris Quirarte (Redemption) on drums, plus Adam Bentley (Arch Echo) on guitar and sound mixing, as well as Joey Izzo (Arch Echo) on keyboards and Perrine Missemer on violin. Here we present our review. Greed is the first song on this album and the impression it gave me is that it has some riffs that take us back to the time when “Ripper” Owens was in Judas Priest. With easily identifiable melodic and progressive elements, it's a song charged with energy and that sets the standard in terms of sound for what we can listen to later. Empty Roads has the participation of Andry Lagiou in the voices, which are distinguished by their strength and depth. As it is a song that is almost 9 minutes long, I consider that it is a success on the part of the American band to play with different musical elements such as the use of acoustic instruments, the use of synthesizers to generate this progressive contribution, as well as including some symphonic parts that recreate this swing of emotions through music and that complement the vocal part. Rage is the homonymous song of this album and in which an interesting fusion between progressive and symphonic metal is created. I like the vocal transitions playing with low and high tones to recreate this cluster of emotions that seek to be transmitted to the listener by exploiting the vocal qualities of "Ripper" Owens. The song reaches its peak at around 5 minutes with a spectacular guitar solo. Beast shows a more rhythmic sound that develops throughout the 11 minutes in which you can see a fusion between symphonic and progressive metal, the latter guided by electric guitar and keyboards. Harry Conklin's vocal performance is wonderful as he adds more emotionality to the song, especially in the parts where it reaches its most critical point. The decision-making on the part of the band is appreciated in creating well-structured full-length songs that don't feel heavy or boring to listen to. Control is a song loaded with social criticism in which "Ripper" Owens performs a vocal performance that denotes this feeling of anger at this restriction of freedom in what we say and do. On an instrumental level, I like how the band transitions from symphonic metal to progressive metal in a natural way, which adds more dynamism and in which you don't feel the passing of time. Magic raises a light of hope in which the main message is to be persistent with what we want to make it happen. A song that overflows energy from the first chord. Loaded with progressive elements through keyboards and guitar make this song enjoyable from start to finish. Tyranny addresses criticism of the government as the main theme in which it is basically mentioned that they will make you listen to their rules, but they will not listen to what they are told. The instrumentation has a high dose of progressive elements, as well as interesting sound transitions that add this dramatic touch to the song in accordance with what is expressed in the lyrical part. The guitar notes introduce us to Slayer, a song that stands out for its aggressiveness both in the musical interpretation and in the instrumental part, the latter with the seven-string instrument as the main element. In some part of the song the presence of the keyboards can be appreciated, giving it this progressive note that is appreciated and that, in a certain way, prepares us for the last song on this album. Dungeons and Dragons begins with the delicate notes of the piano to which the presence of a symphony orchestra is added, creating a completely different musical atmosphere from what we have heard in previous songs. One of the longest songs on the album and perhaps one of the most complex in creative terms. It is to be admired the vocal capacity of “Ripper” Owens to push his interpretative qualities to the limit, flirting a bit with guttural voices. This song is a labyrinth of surprises due to the sound transitions that it presents, some of which we can predict from how the song develops and others that surprised me because it completely breaks with the musical style. Intentional or not, I consider it a great closure to the album. Rage is an album that has caught my attention because of how well structured it is in musical terms, perhaps you get the impression that because they are long-lasting songs they could seem boring, but once you listen to it, it captures you and envelops you in the atmosphere recreated by Lance Sawyer and in which he makes the most of the vocal and instrumental qualities of their guests.
